Sometimes, it seems like you’re using all the right skincare products and breakouts still occur. It happens to the best of us. It turns out though that (as with many things in life) it could be a bad habit that’s killing your complexion and not a faulty product. Here are three suggestions to help you knock those breakouts to the curb for good!
1) Touching Your Face Frequently
I don’t know about you, but this one calls me out BAD! I wish I could say that I practice as well as I preach, but touching the face is something that I have always struggled with.
Constantly touching your face transfers dirt, oil, and bacteria from your hands, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. According to healthline.com, this also includes your phone screen and your pillowcase! Yeah, I never considered cleaning those items more frequently, but it makes sense!
Helpful tip: Keep your hands busy—whether it's holding a stress ball, fidgeting with a pen, or simply being mindful when you're about to touch your face. You got this!
2) Sleeping with Makeup On
Also guilty as charged - even when it seems at the end of the day like you’re just too exhausted to take off your makeup, remember puffy breakouts and do it!
Failing to remove makeup at night can trap oil, dirt, and pollutants on your skin, causing clogged pores and irritation.
Helpful tip: Always cleanse your face before bed. It only takes a minute. This simple habit can make a big difference in keeping your skin clear, fresh, and healthy. No excuses!
3) Over-Exfoliating Your Skin
Too much of a good thing can be bad. That old saying holds true for exfoliants as well! I love my sugar scrub as much as the next person, but I do need to use it in moderation.
Symptoms of over-exfoliating can vary. “Your complexion can become dry and flaky. You may even develop a rash-like texture, leading to uneven tone (like patchy, red blotches). Breakouts are another common reaction, especially small, rough, bumpy pimples.” 2
Helpful tip: While exfoliation is important, overdoing it can strip your skin of natural oils, disrupt its protective barrier, and cause redness and breakouts. Limit exfoliation to 2-3 times per week, depending on your skin type.
We hope these three suggestions will help you to develop clearer skin. It’s a new year - let’s break out the new habits and ditch breakouts!
