It’s pretty well known that drinking water has more benefits than simply helping your body stay hydrated. Water is such an essential need that it seems connected to nearly every ailment in some way.
It makes sense then to ask the question “Will drinking more water reduce wrinkles?” It seems to affect everything else (even mood!) so, why not?
Well the short answer is, yes and no. Let’s unpack the question a little bit more and discover how drinking (or not drinking) water can affect the appearance of wrinkles.
1) Hydration Improves Skin’s Appearance but Doesn't Eliminate Wrinkles
Let’s address both the good and the not-so-good news right away. Staying hydrated DOES benefit your skin—it helps maintain elasticity and a plump, healthy appearance.
However, while it can improve the overall texture and tone, water alone cannot erase wrinkles caused by aging or sun damage. I know, sorry. While just drinking more water would have been a simple solution, understanding what causes age lines can help you decide what treatment avenue is best for you.
2) Collagen Loss, Not Just Dehydration, Contributes to Wrinkles
Wrinkles mainly form due to the natural decrease in collagen and elastin production as we age. Drinking water supports overall skin health, but addressing collagen loss requires targeted skincare, a balanced diet, and protection against sun damage.
Fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-dense foods that are high in omega-3, especially cold-water fish like salmon, are a great option for helping nourish skin with antioxidants and essential fatty acids.1
3) Dehydration Can Make Wrinkles Look Worse
While drinking water doesn’t directly reduce wrinkles, choosing to NOT drink water does indirectly cause them!
When your body is dehydrated, your skin loses moisture, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear more pronounced. Staying hydrated ensures your skin appears smoother and more radiant, even if it doesn’t directly reverse wrinkles.
So - does hydration affect the appearance of wrinkles? Yes, but if you’re staying hydrated and you still have them, drinking more won’t fix the problem.
Fortunately in addition to eating healthier, topical creams and oils can also help reduce wrinkles. Quality definitely matters though, as chemicals in many mass-produced skincare creams can cause further damage.
Rooted for Good’s Rewind Face and Eye Serum is a great topical roll-on option! Infused with Blue Tansy Essential Oil, Rewind Serum helps to prevent & reduce the appearance of wrinkles, diminishes skin spots, & soothes red or irritated skin.
Whether you choose to address wrinkles through nutrition, skincare, or other treatments, remember that your beauty shines through—sometimes even more—because of the laugh lines that tell the story of a life well-lived.
