Self Care Made Simple.
We have all seen her before. We probably know her personally: the mother who serves at her children’s sick bedsides, the sister who insists on making homemade food for her children to keep them healthy, the single mom who juggles office work or a private businesses while raising young souls in an increasingly complicated world, or the aged parent who remembers fondly the ways in which she cared for her now grown children.
Mothers, wives, sisters, grandmothers, single mothers – these caregivers are often unsung heroes in a society that increasingly only recognizes the quantitative rather than the qualitative. We value the expensive product, while the gifts that can’t be bought at any price are overlooked. Givers of such gifts seldom desire recognition. Mothers often try to shy away from the spotlight and don’t often realize the importance of caring for themselves. Their lives have been sacrificially given in so many ways that they don’t realize when their own glass is almost empty.
This all begs the question: what does she really want most? What does she need right now? Mother’s aren’t always used to answering these questions for themselves. For those who are fond of receiving gifts, she might like a day to herself at a spa, a gift card to get her nails done, or the traditional bouquet of flowers. Other moms might prefer a night out either to a restaurant, a movie, or a shopping adventure. Every person is different, and sometimes receiving gifts isn't always her favorite way to receive affection. If this is your mother, wife, or sister, here are some suggestions that don’t involve an extensive budget to help you care for the one who cares for you this Mother’s Day.
Words of affirmation are an under-appreciated love language that’s often dismissed as superficial – “words are cheap.” However, a small word can go a long way, especially at the end of a busy day. Sometimes, all it takes to bring joy to a mother’s agitated spirit is an encouraging, “I’m here to support and cherish you” from her husband, “You’re doing a great job,” from her siblings, or “I love you SO much, Mommy!” from her child.
After a long week, some quality time can be a special gift to an overworked mom, especially when the service to make the outing happen is provided by another loved one. This could be a special dinner that she didn’t have to cook, a husband who volunteers to put the kids to bed for her, or perhaps some time alone together sitting by the fire or watching a movie. Even something as simple as doing the laundry together can help her feel cherished – especially if the work ends with a nice foot massage. The possibilities are truly endless to a creative mind, fueled by love. It’s that time of year when the one who normally serves is finally served in some way, when the caregivers are cared for.
It’s that time when we’re reminded that a mother’s glass – the glass that is constantly being emptied out on behalf of her children, spouse, and others – deserves to be filled, honestly more than once a year. It’s also that time when mothers remember that they can best care for their loved ones from an overflowing glass, not one that is constantly being emptied.
