Picture this - you step into the shower and take some extra time in your cleansing regiment by scooping out some sugar-crystallized, oily cream and gently rubbing it around your face before rinsing it off. To some of us if we’re honest with ourselves, sugar scrubs just seem a little extra - don’t they?
We’re here to tell you that not only are the benefits to your skin incredible, but they also have more uses than simply being an extra step in your face wash routine.
Exfoliating and Cleansing
This first benefit is pretty well known, but it’s worth saying that sugar scrubs remove built-up oil, dirt, and dead skin cells that are clogging your pores. You don’t have to actually “scrub” a sugar scrub. They are most beneficial when applied lightly in circular motions until the sugar dissolves, so that you don’t anger your skin. The sugar adds just enough friction to lift the crud out of your pores without doing damage to your skin.
While they are mostly commonly used on the face, you can honestly use a sugar scrub anywhere where your skin gets dry or even places that are prone to breakouts like your hands, neck, shoulders, back, etc. I have found that after applying a sugar scrub to an area, inflamed with breakouts, they clear up pretty fast!
Moisturizing
Since sugar scrubs contain essential oils and other moisturizing ingredients, they put good oils back into your now empty pores. This nourishes your skin and protects your pores from going into the world empty and vulnerable. Many people describe their skin as feeling “silky” and “smooth” after using a sugar scrub. That’s because of the exfoliation, clearing away all the rough, dead skin but also because of the remoisturizing of the oils.
Sugar scrubs with anti-inflammatory oils can also really help calm angry skin, leading to a softer, calmer, overall happier result!
Aromatherapy
This is DEFINITELY not just a side-effect! Depending on the oils used, sugar scrubs can be amazing aromatherapy and JUST what you need first thing in the morning!

Wait - what? A sugar scrub as an aftershave?
Oh yes! (I figured this out almost by accident once because I scooped out too much sugar scrub for my face and didn’t know what to do with the rest.)
Turns out sugar scrubs are AMAZING when applied to freshly-shaved legs. They remoisturize and calm the pores on your legs which may be a little raised and angry after having a razor slide across them
repeatedly. Not only does the sugar scrub help keep inflammation down (if you’re like me and your legs are sensitive), but it also makes them feel SUPER soft!
You really won’t even need to moisturize after. It works that well!
